Martha Marcy May Marlene Movie Review: Explosive Excellence

http://www.moviefanatic.com/2011/10/martha-marcy-may-marlene-movie-review-explosive-excellence/

As has been widely reported and admitted in our exclusive interview with John Hawkes, Elizabeth Olsen makes an announcement in Martha Marcy May Marlene. As Jennifer Lawrence did in Winter’s Bone (also starring Hawkes), audiences are witness to the emergence of a talent that has all the trajectory power of a meteor of movie magic.

John Hawkes and Elizabeth Olsen in Martha Marcy May Marlene

Olsen is the title character, one two-worded name for when she’s in a cult, and the other her birth name. Her character is a lost and confused young woman who is taken in by the charismatic, but creepy Patrick (Hawkes). He oversees a cult where abuse is rampant and fear constant. Yet, there is something uniquely charming about this man that keeps his minions from running away.

That is until one day when Olsen makes a run for it. She heads to a payphone and calls her sister (Sarah Paulson), whom she has not spoken to in two years. Worried about her, Paulson’s Lucy takes her in, no questions asked. Who is curious as to where she has been is Lucy’s husband Ted (the always astounding Hugh Dancy).

It is at this point that the film simultaneously shows how Olsen is adjusting to life outside of the cult (not well) and how she lived while in the cult through flashbacks. Writer and director Sean Durkin weaves this web with a mastery that is all the more astounding given the fact that Martha Marcy May Marlene is his first film. There is a shadow that hangs over even the brightest scenes that cannot be shaken. Durkin has created a world, both in the cult and at Lucy’s lakeside home, where one feels that we as an audience are sitting on a powder keg of emotion, violence and disdain that could destroy everyone.

He has a steady hand with his actors as well, producing performances from his four leads that are Oscar-nominee worthy, particularly with Olsen. Hawkes manages to take the role of a cult leader and not make it a cardboard cut-out. There are layers to his menacing that are downright scary and sensitive all at once. Even though he rules with an iron fist, that is never fully exposed in the film. Through his eyes and his vocal inflection, Hawkes conveys that power that could easily ruin your day without ever lifting a hand or emitting a stern remark.

The press is abuzz about Elizabeth Olsen and her performance, collectively calling her the next big thing. There is not enough ink in the world to describe the resonance of her work on this film. If Lawrence’s Oscar-nominated turn in Winter’s Bone was an announcement of her talent, then Olsen’s role in Martha Marcy May Marlene is the equivalent of the Big Bang of creative excellence.

Martha Marcy May Marlene is one powerful film as a whole. Its parts are pristine and add up to a film that will stick with you long after the credits roll. In fact, the final 60 seconds of the film are so shocking, you won’t be able to move until the credits finish rolling and the theater lights come up.

‘Paranormal Activity 3′ Hits Theaters, Unveils New Clip

http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2011/10/21/paranormal-activity-3-hits-theaters-unveils-new-clip/

Paranormal Activity 3

The third installment in the “Paranormal Activity” franchise creeps into theaters this weekend. To get you ready for supernatural chills, there’s a sixth viral clip that’s been released. “Catfish” directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman direct the film that finds a young Katie (from the first and second films), and her sister Kristi battling evil.

The newest clip shows more found footage, set at night in the bedroom. Paramount has stuck with their grassroots, viral marketing campaign for the film since Oren Peli’s 2007 movie. Mysterious VHS tapes — simply labeled with the date, 1988 — were passed around to various websites, revealing similar found footage. See what terror this one contains by clicking right here.

Hit the break for more Horror Bites!

“The Frozen Ground” Gets Their Girl
It’s been too long since we’ve had news about the Nicolas Cage serial killer movie, “The Frozen Ground.” We miss your hair, Nic! “Crazy Eyes” Cage plays an Alaskan state trooper tracking a murderer named Hansen. (It’s bad that all we can think about is “MMMBop”, right?) “Big Love’s” Katherine LaNasa has just been cast as Hansen’s (John Cusack) wife in the film. She’s one of the few women that the notorious psychopath hasn’t abducted and hunted like game in the wilderness. Lucky!

Sorry, “The Culling” Has Nothing to do with The Cullens
Currently shooting in New Orleans, “The Culling” finds five friends in one of the most typical — but never tiring — horror scenarios ever. The college buddies plan on spending a fun-filled weekend together out of town, but their itinerary changes when something evil gets in the way. After finding an abandoned 7-year-old girl at an empty café, the pals drive her home, but they don’t know that a nightmare awaits them at the house when they arrive to stay for the night. The folks behind “Machine Gun Preacher” and “Black Swan” are producing this one, which means it might not suck. Jeremy Sumpter, Bret Davern, Elizabeth DiPrinzio, Chris Coy, Lindsey Godfrey, Virginia Williams, Jonathan Schaech and Harley Graham are starring in the indie horror-thriller.

“Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” Rides On
Nic Cage makes another Horror Bites appearance this week. The Spike TV Scream Awards premiered a clip from the upcoming “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.” Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor’s new movie stars Cage as the hell-on-wheels biker Johnny Blaze (AKA Ghost Rider), and he’s not looking too happy in this clip. Ghost Rider’s sequestered himself in Eastern Europe trying to repress his curse, but he’s recruited to battle the devil who wants to possess a boy’s body. The preview looks better than the 2007 film, so perhaps there’s hope for this one. See it all go down on February 17 next year.

Zombie God George Romero Performs “The Zombie Autopsies”
Legendary “Night of the Living Dead” director George A. Romero may be taunting us with fleshmunchers once more in a new film. A pal of the director’s wrote a novel called “The Zombie Autopsies,” which surrounds an “isolated group of people doing autopsies on zombies during the zombie apocalypse and trying to figure out what the hell caused this. They come upon [a] discovery.” Romero’s new movie promises to be bloody good. “I want it to be perfectly accurate, almost shockingly so,” he told io9.

“Piranha 3DD” Trailer is Ridiculous Fun
Also at the Scream Awards this week, the trailer for “Piranha 3DD” made an appearance, and it does not disappoint. So far the film lives up to its name, as you can see from the multiple teeny bikinis in the clip. David Hasselhoff. Ving Rhames, Christopher Lloyd, Danielle Panabaker and more also star in the fish flick that centers on angry piranha that take over a water park — a mecca for bare flesh.

Week in Review: Have You Heard About ‘Paranormal Activity 3′?

http://blog.moviefone.com/2011/10/21/week-in-review-oct-21/

What a week here at Moviefone! ‘Parnormal Activity 3′ scared the crap out of us, reminded us of our favorite ghost scenes, forced us to reconsider the previous films in the franchise and single-handedly stopped what was a growing box office slump with its midnight showings. Not bad! Plus, at least it wasn’t ‘The Three Musketeers.’

Elsewhere on the site, ‘Martha Marcy May Marlene’ stars Elizabeth Olsen and John Hawkes sat down for interviews, as did an extremely honest Matthew Lillard and Hollywood legend Mel Brooks. We offered up some great movie music cues and ’90s remakes that Hollywood should consider. (Don’t shoot the messenger.)

The ‘Hugo’ poster premiered and looked spectacular; this guy or gal’s Pixar costume, however, left a lot to be desired.

Numbers were wild, too: In honor of the 50th anniversary of ‘West Side Story,’ we offered 25 things you might not know about the classic. We also debuted our 25 under 25 list for 2011 in conjunction with the People’s Choice Awards. Have you voted yet? Because you should.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is Talking About Django Unchained

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/screencrave/~3/rqJ2bFnLu78/

joseph gordon levitt 2 2 11 kc Joseph Gordon Levitt is Talking About Django Unchained

Variety is reporting that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is “in talks” for Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained. Though casting can go into a film’s shooting schedule, the film is set for a January start date, and “in talks” usually means that it’s going to happen. There may be some nasty scheduling conflicts, but those can often be worked out.

Gordon-Levitt’s career is stunning at this point. The one time sitcom actor reinvented himself as an indie darling, and with a number of smaller films has turned himself into a minor star (he’s the lead in next year’s Premium Rush), and someone who’s worked repeatedly with Christopher Nolan. Working with Tarantino – who hasn’t used a lot of well known young actors – is a real coup for the actor, and suggests that he will be working for a long time.

And with Don Johnson, Kurt Russell, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, and many more, it’s a good cast as well. Django Unchained is re in pre-production right now, we know that because Samuel L. Jackson tweeted this picture from his wig fitting:

The film is scheduled for a Christmas 2012 launch. There’s been some rumblings that it may conflict with the release of Baz Lurhman’s The Great Gatsby 0 which also stars Leo – but no one’s blinked just yet.

So far, what’s your favorite Joseph Gordon-Levitt role? (I’m going Brick)
