Five Reasons To See ‘The Grey’

http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2012/01/27/the-grey-movie-review/

Liam Neeson rejoins his “A-Team” director Joe Carnahan for the man-versus-nature thriller “The Grey,” in theaters today (January 27). The ads might have you thinking it’s nothing but wolf punching, but there’s a lot more going on.

Here are our five reasons to brave the winter weather and go see “The Grey.”

1. Liam the Badass is Back
Neeson seems to specialize in “Tough Guy In Charge” roles, and there aren’t many characters more badass than John Ottway, an oil-rig employee who leads a rough band of plane crash survivors through the wilds of Alaska. Neeson is believable as the stern but caring father figure, who tries to keep his co-workers alive, and when he stares down those angry wolves, you don’t doubt that he can take them on with his bare hands.

2. The Supporting Cast is Super-Cool
Carnahan picked several talented but not quite famous actors to fill out his cast, and the choices pay off. Accompanying Neeson through the wilderness is a sturdy group of actors including Frank Grillo (“Warrior”), Dallas Roberts (“3:10 To Yuma” and TV’s “The Good Wife”) and a bearded, bespectacled Dermot Mulroney (“J. Edgar” and one of my personal faves, “My Best Friend’s Wedding”).

3. There’s Stuff to Think About
“The Grey” is not simply a horror/action flick featuring man-eating wolves. The film touches on some very deep, thought-provoking subjects like faith, death, loss and humanity’s place in nature. It’s a smart movie, as well as an entertaining one.

4. It’s Darn Pretty
Shot on location in British Columbia, Canada, “The Grey” is beautiful to behold. Grand mountains, lush forests, clear lakes—if this is what middle-of-nowhere Alaska is truly like, I wouldn’t mind hanging out there for a while. Except for the fact that…

5. The Snow is Real
No matter how uncomfortably cold you are this winter, it can’t touch the agonizing experience endured by the cast and crew of “The Grey.” With temperatures well-below zero and wind speeds up to 90 miles an hour, the conditions on set were unforgiving, to say the least. These dedicated actors and crewmembers suffered for YOU, dear reader, so you owe it to them to see this movie.

Chronicle Director Comments on the Fantastic Four Rumor

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=86362
Earlier this month, Variety reported that 20th Century Fox was eyeing Chronicle director Josh Trank to take on the Fantastic Four reboot. SuperHeroHype got a chance today to talk to Trank, who told us that’s news to him, however.

“I know as much as you guys know. I’m totally serious. I know as much as you,” he said. “I saw that leak online and I was like, ‘Um, okay, I’m trying to finish Chronicle right now.’ This is weird. There’s nothing to say, ‘Chronicle’ is exactly the kind of superhero movie that I wanted to make and, going forward, I want to have some original ideas and different things I’m working on.”

So there’s still the possibility that the studio might be interested in having him on board, but they haven’t communicated that to him if…

Listen: ‘Chasing Ice’ Filmmakers Explain How We Can Prevent the Inevitable Apocalypse

http://www.movies.com/movie-news/chasing-ice-interview/6396?wssac=164&wssaffid=news
One of the most explosive films at this year's Sundance Film Festival is Chasing Ice, a documentary chronicling the Extreme Ice Survey directed by Jeff Orlowski. At times the scariest and most beautiful film screening in U.S. Documentary Competition, Chasing Ice follows Orlowski and famed National Geographic photographer James Balog to several of the world's most famous glaciers where they planted cameras in the harshest conditions in an attempt to obtain visual proof of climate change in the melting of this ice. The results are painfully breathtaking, as the film provides what is perhaps the most visible sign of how climate change is affecting these glaciers, and how that, in turn, will in all likelihood destroy the planet we call home.

Weekend Movie Preview: January 27, 2012

http://www.moviefanatic.com/2012/01/weekend-movie-preview-january-27-2012/

Liam Neeson battles wolves, Sam Worthington is fighting for his innocence and Katherine Heigl is waging war on those who skip out on bail this week at the movies. Three new films arrive on screens and each has their own merit. The Grey, One for the Money and Man on a Ledge arrive to combat for your movie going dollar. Who will win?

The Grey: Neeson is an oil rig worker on the outskirts of Alaska’s borders with the Arctic Circle. He’s suffered a loss in his life and feels he has not too much to live for. When he and a dozen of his co-workers board a plane to head home to Anchorage, the jet’s crash will turn him into a driven leader, determined to survive. Surviving a plane crash is enough, yes? Not when there’s a pack of hungry wolves whose entire existence seems to be to kill every man… one by one. Check out our The Grey review for more.

Man on a Ledge: Worthington is joined in a superstar cast that includes Ed Harris, Ed Burns, Elizabeth Banks and Jamie Bell in a thriller about how far a falsely accused man will go to secure his innocence. Worthington rocks in the role and the film will keep you guessing around every turn. This is not simply a story about a Man on a Ledge with a death wish. There is much beyond the scenes that filmmakers slowly dole out in an elongated burn. Movie Fanatic’s Man on a Ledge review delves deeper into the mystery.

One for the Money: Heigl is Stephanie Plum, literary figure beloved by millions of Janet Evanovich fans. Plum gets her first spotlight on the screen with One for the Money. Heigl plays a woman who needs a job desperately and takes one offered by her cousin as a bounty hunter for his bail bond business. Her first charge is to bring back a man who skipped out on bail after being charged with murder. The fact that this guy is the same man who wronged her in high school, makes her mission all the sweeter. In our One for the Money review, Movie Fanatic explores how difficult it is to please fans of a book series. Does One for the Money do it well?

‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’ Is ‘Mind-Blowing,’ Says Mary Elizabeth Winstead

http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2012/01/27/abraham-lincoln-vampire-hunter-mary-elizabeth-winstead/

In MTV News’ recent visit to the set of “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” we learned that the movie will be anything but a traditional look back at the life of our 16th president. Most biopics about Lincoln don’t involve Honest Abe utilizing his own custom form of axe-centered martial arts.

“It’s a very unique take,” Mary Elizabeth Winstead told MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival, in what may be the biggest understatement in movies this year.

We caught up with Winstead, who was in Park City for her new movie “Smashed,” to talk about playing the woman behind the presidential undead killer, Mary Todd Lincoln. Unfortunately for the actress, her role as Mary Todd doesn’t involve much axe-throwing.

“I’m kind of on the sidelines, but I’m very suspicious of my husband’s [actions] and what’s going on in his life,” she said. “I know that he’s hiding something from me. You sort of see me piecing things together.”

“Vampire Hunter” comes out of the twisted minds of author Seth Grahame-Smith and the film’s director Timur Bekmabetov. Having not seen the finished product yet, Winstead couldn’t even begin to explain what we’ll all see when the movie opens in June.

“I honestly have no idea what to expect, even though I’m in the movie,” she said. “It’s really hard to promote in a way because I haven’t seen it, but I know it’s going to be just mind-blowing. It’s not something I can really visualize myself, because it’s so unique to him visually.”
